It goes without saying, if you’re from Saskatchewan you know that green is colour and football is the game. I left Regina in 2001 to pursue my post secondary endeavours (and to get the hell out lol!) and till this day, when I see someone wearing a Riders hat, shirt or what have you.. I nod, or say “GO RIDERS”. In fact, my husband even does it. Some may find it cheesy but I still warmth in it. The same kind of warmth I had when I got my first set of green pom-poms in 1984. When I go home to visit my family, that feeling still resonates. From the porcelain dog that sits in my moms kitchen cabinet wearing a green Roughriders t-shirt with green beads (that once belonged to my Nonna), to the countless holidays being gifted piles of merch. The Riders are a symbol of home to me, yes that may sound crazy but have you ever sat beside someone with a watermelon fitted to their head? Something about the solidarity of one teams spirit bringing people together is cute I guess. I don’t even know the first rule of the game (aside from cheering) but I do know that after 24 years of living in BC, I still call Saskatchewan home – Anita Sikma
